2006-07 DIVISION I ATHLETICS CERTIFICATION
SELF-STUDY INSTRUMENT
BACKGROUND
The University of Alabama began a campuswide effort to recertify its athletics program as part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Athletics Certification program in the fall of 2006.
As part of the certification process, a steering committee and three subcommittees conducted a self-study of the University’s athletics program covering academic integrity, governance and commitment to rules compliance, as well as commitment to equity and student-athlete welfare. Members of the committees represented a broad range of academic disciplines and included a mix of faculty, non-athletic administrative staff and representatives of the athletics department. Dr. Judy Bonner, UA executive vice president and provost, chaired the steering committee.
The University’s self-study report was filed with the NCAA on May 1, 2007. An external team of reviewers will conduct an evaluation visit on campus in October 2007. The peer review team will report to the NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification, which will then determine the institution’s certification status and announce the decision publicly. The process is expected to be completed by February 2008.
Questions about certification process should be directed to Dr. Judy Bonner, provost and executive vice president; Chris King, associate athletic director for compliance; or Dr. Joe Hornsby, faculty athletics representative.
