Dean David Francko has announced he will step down as dean of the Graduate School at the start of the 2016-17 academic year. Dean Francko has lead the Graduate School during a time of exciting change and growth at UA - his contributions are many and he will be missed!
This memo is to notify you that I am now initiating a search for Dean of the Graduate School. Following Appendix A of the Faculty Handbook, the first step is to form a search committee. Six members from the graduate faculty will be elected by the graduate faculty. Once the six elected members have been identified, the Office for Academic Affairs will appoint five members to the committee with one of those members being a current graduate student. The chair of the committee will come from the elected members.
I concur with the process recommended by the Faculty Senate Steering Committee for determining the six elected members: two members will be elected from each of the three areas represented by the campus’ ombudspersons (see Faculty Senate Bylaws Article II Section 10). Thus, two members will be elected from the Arts & Sciences area, two members will be elected from Engineering and/or Business area, and two members will be elected from the other colleges & academic units area.
Graduate faculty members may self-nominate or may nominate fellow members of the graduate faculty who have agreed to be nominated. Nominations are to be sent to Sherri Edwards at firstname.lastname@example.org and will be accepted until 4:45pm October 9, 2015. As soon as nominations are closed a ballot will be prepared and sent out to the graduate faculty for voting.
Thank you in advance for your assistance with this very important process for UA.
