September 25, 2002 MEMORANDUM TO: Tenured or Tenure-Track Faculty FROM: Nancy S. Barrett RE: Innovative Instructional Technology Faculty Grants I am writing to inform you that proposals for the next round of grants for innovative instructional technology are due Friday, November 15. For information on proposal criteria and submission, please go to www.ua.edu/academic/provost/itg. For this year’s awards, special consideration will be given to grant proposals using technology to improve teaching effectiveness in large classes (i.e., classes with an enrollment of more than 50 students). Also, please note that when the instructional technology grants program began several years ago, a proposal to convert a “regular” course to a Web course was an innovative proposal; however, such proposals generally are no longer competitive. If you wish merely to convert an existing course to a Web-based course, please contact the Faculty Resource Center for their assistance. This year for the first time, grant proposals for more than $5,000 will be considered, particularly those that focus on applications of technology for the large classroom. Recipients of the seven innovative technology grants awarded last fall were Earl Ada (SOMED)/Gregory Szulczewski and Shane Street (Chemistry)/Mark Weaver (Engineering); Lenita Davis (Management and Marketing)/John Abercrombie (C&BA Technology Group); Barbara Fischer (Modern Languages and Classics/Gamin Bartle (Language Resource Center); Yuebin Guo (Mechanical Engineering; Robert Potter (Telecommunication and Film); and Cynthia Sunal (Elementary Education)/Vivian Wright (Secondary Education)/Craig Shwery (Elementary Education). If you would like to see a one-paragraph summary of any of these proposals, please go to the Web site at www.ua.edu/academic/provost/itg. For a copy of a complete proposal, you may contact Pat Melson by e-mail (pmelson@aalan.ua.edu) or telephone (8-4893). Some of the faculty members who received grants last fall will make a public presentation to share with other faculty the results of their projects. The symposium is scheduled for Friday, October 25, 2:00-3:30 p.m., 125 Bidgood Hall. This will be a good opportunity for you to see what other faculty members are doing in the area of cutting-edge technology in the classroom, and I strongly urge your attendance at these presentations, particularly if you intend to submit an application.
Also, the Faculty Resource Center would like to invite you to attend
the presentations of the results of their Workshop for Web-based
Instruction held this past summer. Ten faculty members were chosen
from more than 50 applicants to spend two weeks creating a WebCT-based
online course. These presentations are scheduled for Friday, October
11, beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Room 110 of the AIME Building.
If you have additional questions about the grants program, please contact Hank Lazer (hlazer@aalan.ua.edu or 8-4893). NSB/pm c: Hank Lazer Deans, Directors, and Department Heads Lennie Schmandt, Faculty Resource Center |
